Man of the Match: Herbert - Under pressure to perform with the new central midfield signings and he really stood out as the most consistent and determined player on the pitch with some fine passing and tackles.
Wooden Spoon: Battye - Originally awarded to Aaron Bailey for his 3 misses despite his great game, but was later changed to Battye as he seemed to lack concentration in what was an easy game for him. He dropped a corner and could have done better with 2 of the goals.

The season opened up with what should have been a straight forward win for The Woolpack. With the pre-season form a game against The Irish Centre Reserves should have given a win, and the performance on the day would have agreed with this. By half time The Woolpack had mounted constant pressure on the home sides goal but were yet to hit the target, and at the the other the only chance came when Andy Battye dropped the ball from a corner, which was quickly cleared. But an injury to James Turpin shortly before half time saw Arnold move back into defence and Farrand come into midfield. This lost that control from midfield that Arnold, the referees man of the match, had provided and shortly afterwards a space opened for the Irish Centre and a fine through ball and finish meant it was 1-0 at half time.

The second half started brightly with Nathan Adams and new signing Ben Fox causing no end of trouble down the right but nothing seemed be at the end of the moves. Nathan Adams who had been having a really good game playing where he started last season then took a knock himself and had to be substituted. Aaron Bailey moved up front and Jonathan Eke came in at left back. Bailey brought some much needed energy into the final third and made an imeadiate impact shooting over the bar on three occassions.

But against the run of play the Irish Centre earned a free kick which was taken quickly and an unprepared Battye was easily beaten, 2-0. Now the Irish Centre seemed to get back into the game with Arnold making a fantastic last ditch tackle and the brilliant Tom Crowther never out of work.

With the clock running down Richard Kirby was brought on to replace a now tired Ben Fox and an energetic and frustrated Malcolm Gill was pushed up front making a 4-3-3 formation. Almost straight away this worked with Daniel Farrand finding space on the left to knock a cross into the box, after some scrappy play it fell to Gill who neatly finished to make it 2-1 with 5 minutes to go. Arnold was quickly pushed into midfield to make that final push and it worked with another scrappy goal, this time finished by Daniel Farrand, making it 3 in 3 this season.

But the celebrations were short lived as straight from kick off Kev Beatty gave away a free kick for a high foot and the ball was floated in to find the head of an unmarked opponent who headed in the winner. It was a tragic end after a game which which deserved at least a draw.
