The Woolpack FC 2-0 Meltham Victoria Park
Starting Line-up:
GK Battye
RB Campbell, CB Arnold (c), CB Adams, LB Gill
RM Farrand, CM Ginty, CM Herbert, LM Newburn
CF Fox, CF Ro Hawkyard
Subs: Kilroy on for Adams, Lockwood on for Herbert, Dawson on for Fox
Subs Not Used: Eke, Kirby
Goals: Newburn, Ro Hawkyard
Man of the Match: Gill - A solid performance in the unfamiliar left back position, and he bombed forward with fine runs and crossing in the second half.
Wooden Spoon: Kilroy - First game this season and he decided to take the penalty which he hit straight at the keeper!
After a tight fought first half the Woolpack were winning 1-0 thanks to a lucky goal by Scott Newburn on his league début. After some fine work by Ben Fox on the right hand side, Newburn was gifted an easy chance which he shot straight at the keeper only for the rebound to hit him and land into the goal. However, he thoroughly deserved his goal as he had been a constant threat down the left wing, in part thanks to the fine performance of Malcolm Gill behind him at left back.
If Scott hadn't have scored then there were plenty of other chances where the Woolpack could have taken the lead, and the poor kicking of Meltham's keeper should have been pounced on. At the other end Meltham could have scored a few themselves, Battye tipping a shot onto the bar and almost knocking a throw-in into his own net. It was from these throws and corners where Meltham caused their only problems as the Woolpack defence, lacking the height of Turpin or Stanger struggled to get rid.
But for the second half Meltham came out with only 10 men as two left early and they only had one sub. They were soon given a gift as Battye was harshly judged to have prevented a goal scoring opportunity and Meltham were given a penalty. It didn't matter though as the penalty was dragged wide. Then almost immediately up the other end Ross Hawkyard was brought down in the box and another penalty was awarded and a red card handed out. Meltham now with 9 men and defending a penalty were in a difficult position, but after much debate, Ian Kilroy (who replaced an injured Nathan Adams at half time) stepped up for the penalty and hit it straight at the keeper, neither team seemed able to score.
To try and push for a second goal the Woolpack replaced Will Herbert with Chris Lockwood and moved Farrand into the middle with Kilroy and Ginty now in defence with Arnold where he played a fantastic game. This seemed to be working as The Woolpack had Newburn, Hawkyard, Fox, Lockwood and Farrand all forward and pushing for a period of about 10 minutes but still no goals despite bags of chances, including a great save from Newburn's long range effort, a Kilroy header cleared off the line and Hawkyard missing a sitter.
In the end it was Ross Hawkyard who got the goal, making it 6 in 6 for the new striker. He finished neatly after some good work by Fox and a pass from Farrand. After this The Woolpack never looked in any danger and apart from Battye making a great save from a one-on-one and Arnold getting booked for shirt pulling nothing happened in defence. But at the other end chances were being wasted and the final score should have been 5 or 6.
The important thing is that The Woolpack got the 3 points and for the second game in a row managed to score 2 goals, and they kept their first ever competitive clean-sheet. It is however worrying how many chances they missed and despite the dominance of the last two games only have a goal difference of plus one.
