The Woolpack FC 8-1 Wellington Westgate
Starting Line-up:
GK Battye
RB Campbell, CB Arnold (c), CB Adams, LB Ri Hawkyard
RM Kilroy, CM Ginty, CM Herbert, LM Gill
CF Dawson, CF Ro Hawkyard
Subs: A Bailey on for Kilroy, Newburn on for Dawson, Z Stanger on for A Bailey
Subs Not Used: Lockwood, Fox, Eke
Goals: Adams (pen), Dawson, Ri Hawkyard, Kilroy, Ro Hawkyard (2), Gill (2)
Man of the Match: Ro Hawkyard - Not only did the big man score two fine goals he caused the Wellington no end of trouble and was involved in creating many of the other goals.
Wooden Spoon: Newburn & Gill - A joint award for the double miss of the season, 2 on 1 and still the ball didn't go in!
Confidence was high for today's game as last season The Woolpack beat The Wellington 5-1 home and away so 3 points were again expected. It all started very well for The Woolpack with a cruel penalty awarded for a hand-ball and Nathan Adams sending the keeper the wrong way in typical cocky fashion.
It took a while before the Woolpack got going at full speed though, with The Wellington hitting the post and causing problems through the middle. But as soon as the second goal went in, through a fine finish from last seasons top scorer Scott Dawson, the end result was never in doubt. The Woolpack pushed forward more and more, with Malcolm Gill being pushed into a more attacking roll and Kilroy floating in from the right to make a 4-3-3 formation.
Ritchie Hawkyard scored the third on his league debut with a fine header from a corner and then Kilroy scored the goal of the day after hitting the post and bar earlier. His goal came after Dave Ginty hit a rocket from all of 30 yards only for it to hit the bar and rebound to Kilroy who dipped it over the keeper from an impossible angle, magic!
Being four up at half time made the team talk fairly easy, but the team needed to keep focused and not give The Wellington chance to get back in. And with Ross Hawkyard scoring his first of the day and second of the season it was time to make a few subs. Firstly Scott Newburn, who would have started after last weeks brilliant game but he arrived late, came on for Kilroy down the wing and he made an immediate impact by setting up Gill for his second of the season.
Aaron Bailey was brought on for Scott Dawson to see what impact he could make up front with Ross Hawkyard but after only seconds on the pitch he had a nasty fall after a very brave challenge and had to be taken to hospital with a dislocated elbow. Zac Stanger came onto replace him, just as Ritchie Hawkyard went down with a recurrence of his knee problem. So Stanger moved into defence and Ross Hawkyard played up front on his own as The Woolpack continued with 10 men.
Ross Hawkyard added his second by showing everyone the power behind his famous left foot, belting the ball into the roof of the net from a tight angle. Gill added his second and the teams eighth shortly afterwards by coming in from the right. Before The Wellington added a last minute consolation, Campbell went close after a charge up from defence, and both Gill and Hawkyard had chances to get hat-tricks, not to mention the wooden spoon miss from Newburn and Gill!
It was a well deserved and convincing win and three points on what looks like a good season for the Woolpack. They just need to keep composed and continue to play as a team as a big test in the West Riding Cup looms next week.
