The Woolpack were beaten fair and square by the better side at Almondbury Rec in the first round of the Sunday Huddersfield and District FA Cup, but it should have been a much closer contest.

The Woolpack fielded what is possibly their strongest side considering the current injury list, so they will have fancied their chances. But an early handball by Zac Stanger (lucky not to see a card) gave FC Varsity (last seasons division two champions, then as HD One) a penalty and a 1-0 lead. This knocked the Woolpack who looked as though they weren't interested as sloppy play allowed Varsity to make it 2-0.

After Malcolm Gill hit his fourth of the season with a fine volley from the edge of the box, making him the teams top scorer and only cup goal scorer, the Almondbury side seemed to be back in the game and they were the better side. But this good spell just wasn't long enough as half-time came and went allowing Varsity to regroup, and the second half quickly became a one sided affair.

Varsity fired ahead getting 5-1 in front before stand-in manager, Chris Marsden, had chance to make any changes. He brought both Chris Lockwood and Scott Dawson on to push for a goal and when they won a penalty it looked like a last push for an amazing comeback was on the cards. But Nathan Adams, normally confident in front of goal, missed the penalty and watch Varsity break free and score at the other end making it 6-1 and a comfortable cup win.
