Waterloo BC 5 - 1 The Woolpack FC
Starting Line-up:
GK Battye
RB Campbell, CB Turpin, CB Arnold (c) LB Z Stanger
RM Newburn, CM Adams, CM Ginty, LM Gill
CF Dawson, CF Ro Hawkyard
Subs: Herbert on for Newburn, Kirby on for Gill, Eke on for Ro Hawkyard
Subs not used: Dyson, Martin
Goals: Dawson
Man of the Match: Arnold - In a terrible first 20 minutes Dean was the only player who looked interested. Second half everyone stepped up their game but Dean managed to keep the Division One champions quiet.
Wooden Spoon: Battye - Two costly mistakes by the keeper and two weak goals left the game dead and buried. But he made up for it in the second half with better saves and kicking.
Almondbury Rec was the centre of some horrible conditions this morning with heavy rain and strong winds making conditions very difficult for both sides, and with the absence of a referee it made things more difficult. But Waterloo got the better of the conditions in the first half with the wind and rain blowing towards The Woolpack's goal, and with what little sun poking through in keeper Andy Battye's eyes.
It was these factors that led to the first goal. A long range effort slipped through the fingers of Andy Battye and dropped into the back of the net. And a second goal moments later put everyone's heads down. This goal again the keeper could have done better as he watched the ball trickle into the corner. And when the third went it in became farcical as the ball bounced over the keepers head and allowed an easy tap in for the Waterloo striker.
With some serious words exchanged all round the Woolpack began to push forward and it came in the main from their left wing though Malcolm Gill, Zac Stanger at full back and both strikers and Nathan Adams being drawn into the action. The first major chance came from great skill by Ross Hawkyard in the corner of the box, who planted his cross perfectly for Scott Newburn who some how fired his shot backwards. Hawkyard soon after found himself through one on one but was harshly judged off-side. Then a call for a penalty after a handball in the box was turned down and Newburn again missed a good chance at the back post.
But shortly before half time Waterloo had another well played attacking move which was easily finished off in the box giving a 4-0 half time score, one which was harsh but the better side were winning.
At half time it was decided to stick with keeper Andy Battye and let him redeem himself which he had to do very early in the first half with a great save from a one on one. The Woolpack now switched to a 4-3-3 with Will Herbert on for Newburn and a 3-man attack of Hawkyard, Dawson and Gill. This added more width in the final third as well as bolstering the central midfield and this seemed to be working. Both Herbert and Ginty were bossing the middle with Adams looking a major threat from midfield. Then, after some nice inter-changes between Gill and Dawson they got through but couldn't decide who was going to shoot and in the end neither did!
The goal eventually came after some brilliant skill by Scott Dawson who then fired in from an impossible angle. Kirby was then brought on for Gill to add some extra energy to the attack and he got on the end of some fine work by Adams only to scuff his shot. The chances were coming very regular now for the Woolpack and after Waterloo's keeper came off injured they really should have been finishing them off.
With Eke now on up front and Campbell pushing down the right it looked like another goal was due, and when a great through ball found Kirby clean though he left it for an offside Nathan Adams, cancelling the attack! But a goal did come, and it was at the other end and it was due after former Woolpack player Andy Anderson missed an open goal!
With only about 5 minutes left a 5-1 scoreline seemed unfair after the second half performance but the better side won fair and square. The Woolpack were punished for a terrible first 20 minutes and some poor goalkeeping errors. If these were cut out and chances were taken the result would have looked much different come the end.
