The Woolpack FC 2 - 4 Barge Albion
Starting Line-up: Battye, Campbell, Z.Stanger, Arnold, Turpin, Ginty, Newburn, Adams, Ro.Hawkyard, Dawson, Gill
Subs: Herbert on for Gill, Farrand on for Z.Stanger, C.Lockwood on for Adams
Subs not used: Kirby, Martin
Goals: Newburn, Ro.Hawkyard
Man of the Match: Adams - Kept his gob shut and ended up making a much more positive contribution to the team. He also was the most creative player in midfield and until coming off injured looked the most like to get a goal.
Wooden Spoon: Turpin - Two bad passes cost two goals. Aside from these mistakes he didn't put a foot wrong and looked strong again.

The Woolpack started the game against table toppers Barge Albion on a spell of 3 straight league defeats, all games that they felt they should have done better in, and today was no different. Like the games against Foresters, Waterloo and Field Head individual mistakes and simple errors at the back allowed Barge Albion to score 4. And at the other end wave after wave of attack still couldn't find the net on enough occasions - despite being top scorers in the league!

The early moments of the game in heavy rain were end to end. Scott Newburn on the left always involved but not finding an end product, and Dean Arnold never without work at the back. But the breakthrough came for Barge. A good through ball found a totally unmarked striker who calmly rounded Andy Battye in the Woolpack goal and made it 1-0. Moments later Dean Arnold made a brave challenge and went down hurt. After a few minutes on the sideline he decided to continue and was called into action straight away with a big slide tackle.

As the side pushed forward, Dave Ginty was bossing midfield with ease allowing Adams to link up with Newburn to keep pushing down the left, but with no support in the box he was often forced into awkward shots. Scott Dawson hit a fantastic shot which was brilliantly saved by the Barge keeper and a few corners still couldn't break the deadlock. But Barge were gifted a second when Turpin, trying to play the ball out of defence, passed it straight to a Barge winger and they broke free and made it 2-0.

Before half time Ross Hawkyard gave the fans something to cheer about. He turned with the ball on the edge of the box and hit a sweet shot into the top corner. It was a goal he really needed as he hasn't scored for 5 games, and what a way to score.

In the second half, Will Herbert came on for Malcolm Gill to make a 4-3-3 and it soon worked as Scott Newburn, now as a striker, stepped in from the left and hit a shot from all of 25 yards which dropped over the big keeper and into the back of the net. At 2-2 The Woolpack thoroughly deserved something from the game, and looked like going on to win.

A brilliantly disguised pass by Scott Dawson gave Scott Newburn a chance to cross and he found an unmarked Ross Hawkyard who headed wide from 6 yards. Nathan Adams then hit a thunderous shot which the keeper tipped over and Scott Dawson forced another good save.

But as usually happens, when Barge broke at the other end a mistake caused a goal. This time Andy Battye came out to collect when Calum Campbell had it under control, and when he left it for his keeper the striker snuck in and lobbed the helpless keeper. And it didn't get any better when the ball was given away and another one on one saw it become 4-2. With 20 minutes left Farrand and Lockwood came on to support the attack and this new energy, and now playing 3-4-3, the Woolpack continued to push, with some brilliant through-balls from Ginty and Adams but still no end product.

It's hard to say that Woolpack deserve to win when they keep making mistakes at the back and not finishing up front, but with their sheer dominance of games they really should be winning. Without Ben Fox, Ritchie Hawkyard, Sean Cosgrove, and Ian Kilroy through their own absence, the Woolpack were without players big players who really should be there. And with the news that they have now signed Chris Shaw, the former Waterloo BC defender, and Aaron Bailey is back in training and Martin seems to be back to full fitness, they can have no excuses next week against Walpole.
