With 10 regular starters missing and the Woolpack facing the current league leaders it was always going to be a tough battle today at Barr Street. Arnold, Campbell, Newburn, Adams and Ritchie Hawkyard were away, Linford and Shaw were working, Gill was ill and Dawson and Aaron Bailey were no shows. The surprise inclusion of Ian Kilroy and the return of Turpin meant the Woolpack had a squad of 13 to face a side that hasn't scored more than 4 in game all season, but nor have they conceded more than 4!

Kilroy came straight into midfield with Bradley Ramsden-Reilly getting his first start of the season out wide and Chris Lockwood playing on the other wing. Tim Dyson and Turpin came into defence, moving Zac Stanger to right back and Herbert continued at full back. And finally Martin was the surprise partner for Ross Hawkyard up front.

The first 20 minutes of the game were all Barr Street, who should have taken the lead on a few occasions but often missed their chances, and Battye came up with a few good saves. When the break-through goal came, Battye should have done better with the weak shot. Barr Street kept up the pressure, but the entire defence was playing really well. Despite not wanting to give any free kicks away the Woolpack conceded a few too many around the box, although Tim Dyson was lucky the referee didn't see his blatant handball.

Then against the run of play Chris Lockwood found himself breaking through the defence, he had the chance to square the ball to Martin but went it alone and forced the keeper into a brave save, as the ball broke free Ross Hawkyard hit his shot wide. The goal keeper however, suffered a really nasty injury to his knee and Lockwood lost a stud and broke a shin pad! This forced a switch in goal keepers and encouraged a change in pressure in favour of the Woolpack.

With the ball played around much better and some possession being kept the Woolpack won a free kick on the edge of the box which Chris Lockwood took and sent swerving into the top corner - it was a peach! With the momentum now going and 5 minutes to half time, Kilroy broke through the offside trap to finish brilliantly. But the referee called it back for Ross Hawkyard being offside, a bad decision in the eyes of many.

The second half started much the same as the first, with Barr Street dominating, but whenever the ball was cleared The Woolpack looked good across the midfield, and the introduction of Kirby for the injured Lockwood brought some energy out wide. The only problem was the lack of pace up front, as whenever a ball was played through neither Martin nor Hawkyard could get there before the speedy Barr Street defence. This trend was broken on a couple of occasions when Kilroy and Ramsden-Reilly linked up well to create a chance for Martin in which his touch let him down. And another time Kirby broke through but couldn't get a shot away before being tackled.

At the other end the continuation of corners was beginning to draw more and more players forward and the defence were beginning to show signs of the pressure. Turpin was winning everything in the air and on the ground but he picked up a yellow card, and a few occasions the line was out of sync causing strikers to get through. Eventually the goal came for Barr Street, and it was from a corner. The score was 2-1 and 15 minutes were left to play, so Kilroy went up front for his pace, Turpin moved into midfield and Martin went back to central defence.

Soon after this change The Woolpack won a corner of their own. Ramsden-Reilly decided to float the ball to the unmarked Ginty on the edge of the box whose shot took a deflection and found Kilroy at the far post who hit it into the roof of the net. It was like the goal by Ole-Gunner Solskjaer in the champions league final!

The Woolpack now sat back to hold out for a draw with 5 minutes to go. But after a Barr Street player reacted badly to a ball being kicked away he began lashing out, Tim Dyson got involved and within seconds there were 30 players and supporters on the field. The nasty scenes soon broke down and Dyson was dismissed along with the Barr Street player who instigated the incident.

The last 5 minutes were played out fairly incident free and the Woolpack thoroughly earned their point when the whistle blew. With the absent players expected back next week, Chris Marsden will have some tough decisions to make - especially as the opponents are Field Head, who have come from behind to win by 1 goal on 3 occasions.
