The Woolpack FC 2 - 1 Huddersfield Irish Centre (Res)
Starting Line-up: Battye, Gill, Herbert, T.Dyson, Turpin, Shaw, B.Ramsden-Reilly, Ginty, Ro.Hawkyard, Arnold, C.Lockwood
Subs: Dawson on for C.Lockwood
Subs not used: Martin
Goals: Ro.Hawkyard, Arnold
Man of the Match: Ginty - Solid game in midfield creating lots of chances going forward.
Wooden Spoon: Turpin - Because he wasn't man of the match.
After a mix bag of results over the last 4 or 5 games nobody really knew what would happen today, playing a side whose points this season have come from all the same teams as the Woolpack, plus 3 from beating them on the first day of the season. It was decided to change the system to a 5 man midfield, with Dean Arnold pushing forward as a striker where necessary. With a handful of absences, Shaw moved into midfield, Gill and Dyson came back into the starting 11 and Ramsden-Reilly got a start.
The first half was very even, with both sides playing some nice football and creating chances. At the back the Woolpack looked solid, and the compact midfield forced the Irish Centre into a long-ball game, which suited James Turpin at the back, winning every header. On one occasion, Battye pulled off a brilliant one-handed save from a long range effort, which Herbert cleaned up well.
At the other end the best chance fell to Dean Arnold at the front post after some great link-up play on the right hand side, but he made it easy for the keeper in the end. Shaw also had a couple of chances in the box and Lockwood was a threat down the left wing.
The second half started much the same, and both sides were flying in with heavy tackles, despite the referees warning at half-time - but it made for a good competitive match. Then maybe to try and stop this physical side to the game the referee awarded the Irish Centre a very weak penalty for an apparent trip by Tim Dyson. The penalty was despatched really well and the Irish Centre were 1 up, and probably deserved it.
The Woolpack now pushed Arnold forward and began to build a counter attack, and just as the management were ready to withdraw Ross Hawkyard who was lagging up front he managed to battle for a loose ball and side foot into an open net. So at 1-1 and 20 minutes to go Hawkyard stayed on and Lockwood was replaced by Scott Dawson to try and get the winner.
The next 15 minutes were close at both ends, with Battye making some good saves and the Woolpack firing in a few long shots. With 8 minutes to go Turpin's free-kick was flicked on by Hawkyard to Arnold, who carried the ball through the defence and finished brilliantly into the bottom corner, it was a deserved goal that now gave the Woolpack the advantage.
The last 5 minutes were very tense, with the Woolpack defence starting to make mistakes although the Irish Centre seemed to be out of steam and they couldn't find that edge to get the equaliser.
In the end the Woolpack came out deserved winners for another good team performance. It was a game where they frustrated the opponents and stopped them playing football, whilst enjoying some great passages of play themselves.
