Subs not used: B.Ramsden-Reilly, Dawson

Man of the Match: Newburn - Even though the side didn't score any goals and created few chances, Scott was a constant threat when he moved to the left wing and he never gave up.

It was tipped as the fourth spot decider. Meltham on 18 points and Woolpack on 17, both having played equal games and an equally difficult set of remaining fixtures, whoever won would be sitting pretty in fourth and unlikely to be budged from the top half.

The Woolpack might well have been feeling pretty confident. Despite Calum Campbell and Bradley Ramsden-Reilly arriving late, and Tom Crowther out and Chris Lockwood injured from the weekend they had the boost of Ben Fox and Sean Cosgrove (the midweek sunshine brought them out).

With the sun and wind blowing into the face of the defence in the first half it was a difficult start, with Martin losing control at right back and allowing an early chance which Battye saved well. The pressure from Meltham didn't really cause many problems in the first half, with Turpin and Shaw both awesome at the heart of defence. Martin had to make a goal line clearance and a last ditch tackle, and Battye made some good saves, but apart from this they didn't look troubled. But they still managed to go in at half time 1-0 down, thanks to a free kick that hit the bar and rebounded in off Battye.

This goal and the non-stop pressure was frustrating at the other end. The Woolpack had a few good chances, most notably Scott Newburn missing a 1 on 1, Arnold getting a knock to the head when he bravely got on the end of a Ginty through ball, and a great cross by Newburn that none of 3 players could get on the end of. This frustration earned the Woolpack 2 yellow cards, Fox and Cosgrove both getting involved in off the ball scuffles.

At half time Martin was replaced by Campbell to add some attacking threat from defence now the wind and sun was in the Woolpack favour. But within moments of the restart Meltham made it 2-0 with a quick counter attack.

The Woolpack now began a full half of pressure, but like so often happens they couldn't score. Ginty hit a great freekick which was saved by the keeper. He also saw his corner hit the stanchion and rebound onto the pitch and Arnold scored but it was ruled out. Cosgrove also went close direct from a corner, and the keeper made many more top saves.

Meltham, on one of the rare occasions they broke forward, managed to seal the victory with 15 minutes to play when a one-on-one was neatly finished by the striker. Up the other end Turpin had a chance from a corner, but he was brought down by his own man, Linford (on for Fox). Scott Newburn also had a big shout for a penalty. He was pushed away from the ball and fell inside the box, but the referee judged it to be a freekick. Late substitute, Kirby also had a couple of chances pushing forward from left back.

In the end it was a disappointing evening for The Woolpack. They didn't necessarily deserve a win, but they at least deserved a goal or 2. What Meltham did better was to take their chances and keep the ball much better. The Woolpack had some good passages of play but they often ended too easily, with players getting crowded out, and lacking support. Motivation is now at an all time low and they need a big win against Barge Albion at the weekend to get back on track.
