Woolpack FC 2 - 4 Woodfield Park SSC
Starting Line-up: Battye, Campbell, Kirby, Shaw, Martin, B.Ramsden-Reilly, Newburn, Ginty, Arnold, Ro.Hawkyard, Ri.Hawkyard
Subs: Herbert on for Newburn, Turpin on for B.Ramsden-Reilly
Goals: Campbell, Arnold
Yellow Cards: Shaw
Man of the Match: Campbell - Topped off a fine performance down the right playing both full back and on the wing, with a goal near the end.
After the last couple of results going well the Woolpack wanted to extend this end of season form with a good result against a first division side who now have nothing to play for as they are sitting safe in fourth spot. This security of Woodfield Park meant that they didn't take the game seriously, picking their starting 11 out of a hat and taking every opportunity to wind each other up on and off the field. This was something that the referee failed to get any control of, in fact he found the whole thing funny, taking insults with jest and missing countless obvious handballs and giving unnecessary free-kicks merely on complaints by players.
With this in mind the Woolpack knew that their opposition didn't see them as a threat and this meant they could take advantage of it. Early on it was proving to be an easy game, with Arnold making it 1-0 after countless attacks and shots. The only threat for Woodfield seemed to be their long goal kicks and the occasional cross-field ball, but all was handled fairly well by the defence.
As the half moved on the atmosphere on the pitch became non-existent, with Woodfield not caring and The Woolpack losing interest in a boring game. The Woolpack went close to making it 2-0, with 2 impossible saves from the keeper. At the other end Woodfield moved a few players round into normal positions and they now were posing a threat with three players up front against a tired Woolpack defence. A mix up between Kirby and Shaw saw Martin come across to cover leaving Campbell with two men in the box. A lovely cross was then finished well at the back post and it was 1-1.
At half-time Woodfield sorted out their positions and they soon took the lead with Battye slow off his line to close down a 1 on 1. Now every Woodfield player wanted to play up front and at times The Woolpack defence were facing 5 attackers. The upside of this was that it was leaving gaps at the other end, but The Woolpack just couldn't score. The keeper made 2 brilliant saves from close range shots and the Woolpack hit a few shots wide.
Woodfield then scored their third from a corner where Turpin (on for Ramsden-Reilly) was hit by the ball after nobody connected with the cross and it rolled to a striker who finished easily. Then another bad decision from the referee allowed it to go 4-1, when he said nobody was offside (even though he couldn't state who was playing them on) and they finished easy.
At 4-1 it was a totally unfair result, and it came as a slight relief when Campbell found some space at the back post and scored his first goal of the season. The game finished 4-2, and the Woolpack will feel annoyed with both themselves and Woodfield. Woodfield did not deserve a win as they didn't play well or with any sense of professionalism, but the Woolpack didn't take advantage of this. Despite their attacks they couldn't score, and they were poor at the back, not adapting to the 3 attackers of Woodfield. All in all a game worth forgetting.
